The Story

Red Root (2005*roughly*-) is the online secret hobbit-hut belonging to me, Luke Williams, a ‘gnarly’ young web developer from London, who happens to have curly hair to keep his brain cosy all year round. As you can probably guess this is my blog, where I ramble on about a whole manner of things in a number of formats, as well as posting items for my portfolio, which you can see by clicking on The Work. I’ve been sticking my fingers in many web-orientated pies since about 2000, so I like to think I know a fair bit about the web, regardless of my age (18 at time of writing). I started out primarily as a designer and front-end developer, but my new love is back-end programming, specifically PHP. I will happily wittle away the hours just to make that useful class I thought of.
But I’m not just a web developer!
I’m also a big anime fan. I started out the usual way watching a few videos my uncle had of The Guyver, as well as digging into Dragonball Z. From there I’ve widened my horizons and have consumed a whole number of different series from all sorts of genres.
If you’re interest, take a look at my profile’s anime and manga lists over at myanimelist.net to see my favourite series.
I’m a gamer, though not specifically of the hardcore ‘OMG YOU ARE SO 1337′ variety. I’m, as you might expect, a big fan of RPGs, mainly the console variety such as Kingdom Hearts, Chrono Trigger and of course Final Fantasy.
I have dabbled in online MMORPGs, but I never last long due to the amount of time required, and I also play a few sports games to a degree, which leads me nicely onto the next bit!
I’m a rugby player, currently playing for the Old Millhillians 2nd XV, after captaining my school 2nd XV for a fairly successful season. I ply my trade in the 2nd or back row, so I can throw my significant bulk around the pitch and make a few good turnovers in the process.
If anyone who cares to read this knows of any other rugby players with web or programming related professions, let me know, because so far I’m the only one!
What I’m up to … updated: 10/8/07
After getting straights As in my Maths, Chemistry and ICT A Levels, at the moment I’m working as a lead programmer for the North London web company Active Webdezign during my gap year, before heading of to read Multimedia Design and Technology at the University of Kent in September 08.
