In my inappropriate quest to learn some practical PHP during my easter holidays (Inappropriate because I should by all rights be revising for my A Levels) I’ve actually managed to make something. I bought a very helpful book on PHP and MySQL called ‘Practical PHP and MySQL: Build Eight Dynamic Web Applications’. As you might have guessed, this is exactly what I’ve needed to get me beyond the low-level processing I can code in PHP, even though I can understand more complicated aspects when debugging or hacking PHP systems such as WordPress. I’ve only managed to get round to doing the first projectso far, because of other important issues I’ve needed to attend to, and the fact I added more features than the book describes.

So here is the result! A purely PHP and MySQL powered weblog. It’s quite simple to look at, since style was exactly my priority when I was making it. I’ll probably jazz it up at some point but I’m happy with it at the moment. There is an admin section which you need a password to access (if anyone’s curious, just e-mail me and I’ll send the login details). Within that, the book actually just describes how to make an ‘Add’ and ‘Edit’ section for each post: I took that a step further and created a ‘Manage Entries’ feature, similar to what WordPress uses. I’ll do the same for the categories section at some point but at the moment I don’t have the time. Anyway, I’ve very proud, since this is the biggest thing I’ve done in PHP before, and the next project is a discussion forum, which I am very excited about.

I’ll get some pictures of it up soon. I’ve got my Driving Theory Test today, so that’s my priority.
