When Chocobos Roamed the Earth

To me, the Final Fantasy series represents all that a good game should be. Interaction is generally seen as the key to the success of video games, which is the primary reason they differ in scope and audience from books, movies and television. Interaction in storytelling is something with truly appeals to me. I’m not talking about a completely open ended story like ‘Oblivion’, but something I can lose myself in, while fiddling with all sorts of micro-management tools along the way, and fighting battles against strange monsters.

Ok, fine. Enough rambling: I’m an RPG-Head, and I have just pre-ordered Final Fantasy XII, which will arrive a week tommorrow… And I can’t wait!

ooo shiny

Normally, I’m one hell of a spoilerphile (I have a blind spot for ‘Warning! Spoilers’ on Wikipedia for example), but this time I’ve been a very good boy and awaited the arrival of this majestic piece of roleplaying goodness in blissful ignorance. It’s strange to think that the last real Final Fantasy I played was Final Fantasy 10, way back in 2002. Has it really been that long? Was I really only 12 years of age when I played it? Either way, it’s been far too lengthy a time period, though the Kingdom Hearts series has helped soothe the intervening time. And it doesn’t help that it was released in Japan over a year ago, and the US around 6 months afterwards: us Europeans sit here twiddling our thumbs, waiting for language barriers to break down, whilst the rest of the gaming world runs around happy on chocobos, hunting moogles by moonlight (perhaps not that last part).

But lo, the time has come: the long-awaited treasure will soon be in my grasp, and then placed swiftly into my PS2. And on that day, we shall rejoice, for all is right in the world… though Final Fantasy XIII is looking pretty nifty too!

Edit: Dear Lord … DANCE
