My dad pointed out an article to me in ‘Computer Weekly’ a few days ago, describing how uSwitch.com, the utility price comparison website, boosted their business extensively by switching (pun completely intended) to Web 2.0 technologies, notably AJAX. The article provides a link to a related online article, which is quite and interesting read. It presents the perhaps unsurprising notion that big businesses want to implement Web 2.0 services as one large integrated package, not as separate components, and to purchase these from major software developers. Now I’m probably a bit out of touch with the business side of Web 2.0, being situated on my small island across the Atlantic, but my spider sense tells me that such a product isn’t too likely at the present time. Anyway, an interesting thought.
Holidays are in full swing: I’ve spoken to two website design companies, got a few freelance jobs, now I’m looking for some secure employment from September. I’ve got a few names down, but I need to get my backend coding up to scratch. I recently purchased ‘Bulletproof AJAX’ by Jeremy Keith, and I think I’m going to set about creating the AJAX Shop at the back of that soon. At the moment I’m looking for something to help me learn more advanced PHP, particularly with more real world relevance.
However! The most important I should (read: need) to do at the moment is get stuck into some revision. How am I going to get top A Level marks in Chemistry if all I have in my short-term memory is how to perform complex XML functions in PHP? My first task is to complete this ‘quick’ 35-question excercise on Integration, which to be honest I don’t find that difficult, just time-consuming. From Monday its going to be full on revision, coupled with my need to actually learn for my driving Theory Test on the 17th. Oh the joys of the 24-hour day!
Oh, and 300 is a terrific film.
