Hard Graft
It’s a been a long, arduous week for me: my computer packed up on me on Sunday. Luckily, before it was picked up by the good folk at Dell to be fixed, I managed to get most of of my ‘My Documents’ folder copied/backed up onto DVD-RWs. Even so, it’s still a pain not having a computer to myself, particularly as I’m doing my ICT project at the moment. I’ve actually just managed to get my hands on a laptop, which is already proving to be incredibly useful, especially with the ICT Project looming over my head like a vulture.
This just made me smile. The reason I can see behind this is that most people might download it as a back-up or just so that they can view pages in IE, like designers do. 100 million installs does not mean that that many people actually use it. And yes, that does mean that more people are using IE6 or Firefox. The former means more years of CSS based pain until this is actually sorted out!
I seriously cannot wait till I get my PC back: withdrawal is a vulgar beast. The fact that my ICT is winding down means more free time to be spent tinkering with website design (I could even get the Portfolio section done). This also means that maybe I could actually put useful content in these posts, instead of struggling to find enough words to make each post worthwhile.

Yeah, I haven’t even installed IE7 on my laptop, since you can’t run IE6 and IE7 (without a hack). I need IE6 to make sure my sites work, but other than that, it’s Firefox 100%.
You should look into partitioning your hard drive. On my PC, I have C:, E:, and F: — they’re all the same (physical) drive, but partitioned. I keep all of my media (music, videos, images, etc) on E:, and all other stuff (college stuff, sites, etc) on F: — then if I ever have issues and need to format, all I have to do is format C: and I never have to backup my stuff. I just have to re-install the programs (if they were installed to program files). It’s really easy to partition, too. Anyway, I don’t even know what happened to your computer. Just a suggestion. Oh, and backups are definitely a good things
Posting gets tough when you’re busy. It’s often hard to come up with stuff to write about. I’ve found it easier to not even think about it, and as things come to my mind, make note of them in a writeboard or some web-based document to store ideas until I find the time to write a post about it.
One more thing, what’s the ICT Project all about?
Yes backups definitely are a good thing. There are two really important folders in my PC which I just could not do without at the moment: my School Work folder and the folder which contains all my design and work (which luckily enough is online anyway). So I think partitioning it may be a good idea (Thanks mate), I’ve got a friend whose pretty nifty with that might be an idea.
Oh, and I do that too: I collect ideas in a draft post in the Wordpress dashboard until I’m ready to write. In fact thats what worked well for the post before this.
My ICT Project is to develop, and also document the development of, a Franchisee Management System for a computer software franchise that just started in the UK called ‘Concerto Networks’. It’s a pretty hefty challenge, and the documentation is time consuming, since ’showing the development of the system’ actually means taking screen shots as it is being made and describing each step along the way. Not fun. So far I’m on 250 pages, and I’ve got a fair bit more to do.
