Pressure on the British Youth
Not sure what the situation is in the rest of the world but I clocked yesterday why all the young people in Britain are dissillusioned, lazy, and don’t give a flying fuck while watching Mock The Week last night.
We’re told our whole academic life to do well in exams, study hard, get good grades all for that on exam or shot at university, and what does the older generation/media generally say when we consistently get better grades? ‘Oh they were harder in my day, not proper exams now’. What are we supposed to do? Maybe we are just smarter than they were, whats so wrong with that, isn’t that the purpose of education, so each new generation gets the benefit on the knowledge of the many generations before, becoming bolder and brighter and seeking to achieve more? How are we supposed to feel when are efforts are belittled? Apathetic, fed-up, rebellious no doubt. It’s a fact that the pass % and top grade % hasn’t stopped increasing over the last 25 years, and yes, maybe exams were harder ‘back in the day’, but back en less people went to university since degrees were not basically entry requirements for most jobs as they are now. I’m damn proud of my AAA in Maths, Chemistry and ICT because they were bloody hard exams and I still regularly outsmart members of my family who get similar grades when they took their exams.
Excuse the rant, it’s been preying on my mind all day like a colossal righteous mantis.th

Tell me about it man. Congrats on your straight As! I’m working hard trying to get my Computer Studies coursework done for AS. The timeline is ridiculous even by industry standards. Of course, there’s nothing worth doing in life aside from school work, like say, what we’re actually passionate about, so they might as well keep us busy…
“How are we supposed to feel when are efforts are belittled? Apathetic, fed-up, rebellious no doubt.”
Spot on.
Cheers mate.
I had just the same thing for my AS and A Level *gulp*, gotta love the deadlines, what sort of project you doing? I’ll tell you what though, working at a web design place in my year off, those documentation skills help. Whenever I’ve had to write a small functional spec, I know it’s nothing compared to the monster I ahd to deal with last year
It’s a C++ program for a company of our choosing. I’m developing a quoting system for the Web design company I work part time for. I think I may have bitten off more than I can chew though, having only coded in C for the first time in September.
Documentation is killer, yeah. I have the real meat of that to look forward to in the final scramble a few weeks from now. Give me Web work any day :/
C++? Lucky devil, at least you got to use a programming language, wish I could have done mine in PHP. Alas, I had to use a database management creator called FileMaker Pro, made a franchisee managment system for a computing business franchise. Joy
(Which reminds me I should get some evidence of it up now that it’s back in hands)
