Backstory
Guess what? I made a Wordpress plugin!
The basic motive behind this was how incredibly frustrating IE 6 and 7 are. The amount of time spent fixing sites up so that they work not only in Firefox, Opera, Safari etc leads to a rather unhappy development team. This has all been said before I know, but I put all this pent up anger into something productive. I’m actually running the plugin right now on Red Root, though if you’re using Firefox, Opera or Safari, you probably can’t see it. Try switching 1 to IE 6 or 7, and take a look at the top of the page.
A nice big orange banner right!
My colleague saw what I’d done and requested the source code, but I thought even better I’ll make a Wordpress plugin for it, and voila! Now keep in mind this is my first plugin, so it’s not perfect, but I’ve got to say the Wordpress plugin system is quite extraordinary. A bit fiddly at first, especially since I couldn’t find any standardized or consistent documentation, but once you get your head around the numerous functions, it’s all good.
And it’s note just a banner! There’s an options page in the admin section ‘Options’ where you can change the message that shows up in the banner.

‘Get Firefox’ Banner Wordpress Plugin v.1.0
Be sure to also check the download out at wp-plugins.net and wp-plugins-db.org to make sure you have the most up-to-date version. If you do download it, please let me know of any bugs, so I can fix it up nice and shiny.
Note: Ensure that you have the function wp_head() running in your template header, and wp_footer() in your template footer. Most templates have this as standard, but I’ve noticed they’ve been lacking in some, so make sure.

Nice plugin mate! Thinking of submitting it to wordpress?
Don’t think you can do that, wouldn’t mind getting it some publicity though.
By the way, you may be interested in this: Google Optimizer. We’re using it at work for an SEO client at the moment.

Any screenshot to show?
Can we edit it to show my adsense referall?
Rui
Not entirely sure what you mean by adsense referral Rui, could you elaborate a bit to see if I can give you an answer :). Is it a snippet of HTML, or javascript etc.
You’ve got a typo in the banner’s text.
You wrote:
“It seems your using an unsafe, out-of-date browser.”
It should be:
“It seems you’re using an unsafe, out-of-date browser.”
Nice plugin, I know exactly how frustrated I am when dealing with all IE versions, FIREFOX rules!!!
@Rob: Thanks for the tip, all sorted now
@Shearyadi: Thanks mate, make sure you use it, I’m sure your Newcastle Site could generate a lot of converts!
Yep, typo, you’re not your.
Also could you add it to Wp-Plugins-Db.org! so the wp-plugins tracker can notify and check to see if there are any updates.
Good work btw

@Scott: I’ve just added it wp-plugins-db.org. I’ve added the link into the main post. Thanks for using the download mate!
This plugin would cause me to never visit the blog again. I don’t visit blogs to be lectured to.
Lectured? The content in the banner is up to you, and there’s no reason it couln’t just be a simple link designed to inform, not lecture.
The amount of times I’ve heard clients say ‘What’s Firefox?’ or ‘What’s Safari?’ …
I like this, but that white background on the text kind of ruins it. Would it be possible to just have the text without the white background?
For now, the way you can do this is to find the CSS in the plugin file. In future releases, which I’ll be working on soon, I’ll put the functionality to change the CSS in.
Nice plugin! Even if we could just get people to quite using IE6. I mean, come on people. Don’t IE people use Windows Update ever? Sheesh
Adsense code is a piece of javascript with the referrer’s ID contained in it and if anybody downloads the browser from Google downloads through the referrer, the referrer earns credit. Can you please make it compatible to add the adsense code rather than directing the user to download the browser from firefox.com?
Hey, nice plugin.
However, I think the plugin has some compatibility issue with my “Admin Drop Down Menu”.
You may want to see that issue.
Thanks again.
@raj: Thanks for the info mate, I’ll be working on that for the next release. Take a look here for details.
@Ruhaizad: Ah okay, I’ll take a look into that, I think I know the plugin you mean.
Thanx dude, lemme try inserting adsense code in the current version itself!
Sweet, thanks for adding to the database. Just checked my plugins and saw it was out of date, grabbed it and updated in 2 mins, Many thanks.
Oh, ps, Sunderland to win on Saturday

Hi Luke,
I adopted your plugin to my new blog which hopefully will be started at 1st January 2008. Thanx a lot for your nice work!
Michael
This is amazing. Intalled on my blog, my mom’s blog, my friends blog, and my dad’s unfinished blog.

Yay, I was looking for something just like this! Works great on my blog. I did change the banner design to look more like a browser message, so as to affect my design as little as possible. Your orange version was a bit… loud
I like it. Installed it on both my personal and professional blog. My only complaint is that you haven’t made it available in zip format yet. I used an on-line converter to make it work with Anirudh Sanjeev’s OneClick Installer.
Hello,
I noticed that the “close” cross on the right of the “get firefox”, on the current page, doesn’t work with IE6… Maybe the plugin still needs some work ?
Good luck and good work,
Oliver
I was getting a fatal error when I tried to activate this. To fix it I opened the get-firefox-banner.php and changed your short tags (
Oops, I should have known better then to include the php tags in my above example. You’ll want to fix that in my last comment. Sorry.
